Sarzana has ancient origins, already remembered in the first millennium and a fascinating history, dominated by many lords and cities, Castruccio Castracani, Spinetta Malaspina, the Pisani, the Visconti, the Genoese and the Florentines and a is place where Dante dwelled. The city has two well-preserved castles: the fortress Firmafede, of Pisana origin and the fortress of Sarzanello, ancient Episcopal residence.

Today the walled sixteenth century village is almost intact, with walls and four towers. The historical centre develops along the Bertoloni and Mazzini streets, between Porta Parma and Porta Romana, on the old stretch of Via Francigena. Currently the city is also characterised by a significant dynamism and cultural activity. Many concerts and events take place on the territory:
